Natural based products have a shelf life that lasts from 3 months to 12 months, depending on ingredients. Natural Hair Texture Reference Guide
Information in regard to natural hair textures can be found below. Individual factors such as DNA, environment, health and hair health condition can affect the appearance of hair. This guide is a general reference to be used by those who are not certain as to what category their child's hair type may fall under. Some African American children who may have a biracial or mixed ethnicity, will often times experience a transitional stage of hair texture which can typically occur between ages two and five years. Hair may appear to change textures as well as density and natural coloring. During this time it may be necessary to alter product use according to current needs. Hair strands that are 1-2c require more frequent washings with less usage of oil based products. Hair strands that are 3-4c may require less washings with a need for more frequent oil applications to prevent dry and brittle conditions. This chart is not conclusive therefore it should only be used as a reference for both girl and boy hair types. It is not uncommon for hair to appear to be between two different textures. Please use this guide according to your own discretion.
Fine Hair Texture Type 1
Fine hair has no wave or curl pattern. Because of its texture, it tends to reflect light thus appearing shiny without the need for oils or shine enhancing products. Cleanse and condition daily. Suggested Product Use: Products found on our baby hair care page are lighter in natural oil composition. Can be used as needed. Cleanse and condition strands daily.
Characteristics:
Fine with no apparent wave or curl pattern
Tendency to be excessively oily
Resistant to curling and styling without styling products
Resilient and less prone to dry hair damage
May appear limp and lifeless due to oils (sebum) traveling down the hair shaft when hair is not kept clean
Cuticles naturally lay flat thus allowing easier tangle free maintenance when kept brushed from root to tips Strands may appear to be thick or thin in density.
Wavy Hair Texture Type 2
Wavy hair tends to be coarse with an apparent loose "S" pattern. Cleanse and condition strands every 1-3 days. Suggested Product Use: Light to minimum applications of any of our hair care products as needed.
Characteristics:
Less shiny and oily than Type 1 hair which may require additional oils for maintenance.
More prone to frizz and tangles
Elongated loose S shape to hair strands which may appear to be thick or thin in density
Subtypes:
Fine/thin - straightens easily
Medium - resistant to curling and styling without the use of styling products
Thick/Coarse - resistant to curling and styling without the use of styling products
Curly Hair Texture Type 3
Curly hair strands have a very defined "S" pattern with more natural body and fullness. It does not appear to have as much natural shine as fine and wavy hair. Curly hair appears to straighten easily when wet yet reverts back to its naturally curly state when dry. Cleanse and condition strands every 3-5 days. Suggested Product Use: Moderate usage of any of our hair care products as needed.
Characteristics:
May form knots and tangles easily
Loop appearance to hair's "S" pattern
Less shiny and oily than type 1 and 2 hair
Straightens easily when wet but reverts to curly state as it dries
Large loopy curls (may be large enough to fit around pinky finger)
More defined curls or ringlets
Subtypes:
Hair may appear to have a loose S (wave) and S curl pattern
Kinky (Afro) Hair Texture Type 4
Kinky hair can appear to have a "z" pattern to strands which are wiry, tightly coiled, dry and nappy. The coil/curl diameter can vary from a pencil to a watch spring. Kinky hair textures are drier than other hair types because the cuticles are not naturally capable of laying flat thus allowing proper absorption of conditioning oils. Hair may also be more prone to matting, brittleness and breakage due to compacted strands. Cleanse and condition strands every 7-10 days. Suggested Product Use: Moderate to heavy usage of any of our hair care products with daily application as needed.
Coiled strands make it difficult for sebum to reach the ends
Hair strands grow curved/coiled in pattern thus appearing to be shorter than when stretched out
Subtypes:
Tightly coiled - "S" to "Z" shape appearing to have a mixture of hair types 3 and 4
Incapable of permanant straightening without heat or chemical applications.
Easily reverts back to tight coils when wet
Relaxed or Texturized Hair
Hair that has been relaxed or permanently treated with chemical based products require special maintenance and intervention methods to prevent breakage and damage that can occur during or after the hair has been processed. Natural plant based oils can successfully condition relaxed hair over a period of time, however this may take longer due to the process that hair strands must endure in order to become permanently straightened. Sulfate free shampoos can cause relaxed hair to become hard, brittle and difficult to manage ( due to the lack of surfactants to break down minerals in rinse water) therefore a light (but detergent based) shampoo is needed to break down minerals in which relaxed hair is being cleansed and rinsed. We offer Avocado and Almond Butter shampoo found on our Mineral Indulgence website to help properly cleanse and condition relaxed hair. It can safely be used for children along with our Shea and Mango Butter Deep Conditioning Hair Mask.
Daily moisturizing and deep conditioning with any of our hair care products (with the exception of Naturally Sulfate Free Shampoo) can help to address the needs of hair that has been chemically relaxed or straightened with heated appliances. To prevent excess breakage, keep the ends of relaxed hair clipped, wash every 7 days and deep condition after each washing. Use tension free hair accessories and a wide tooth comb when styling. Use hair styles that do not require tension around the hair line.
